Summer Heat

Preston Pointe is hosting a class with Legacy Healthcare on hydration this month.  Summer is here, and that means plenty of sunshine, longer days, and warm weather activities all of which can increase the risk of dehydration. Keeping hydrated is especially important for seniors as dehydration can pose serious health problems.

Preston Pointe provides drink stations for our senior residents to enjoy at their leisure. Preston Pointe drink stations offer many different flavors of teas, coffee and fruit-infused water for our residents. Drinking water throughout the day rather than waiting until you are thirsty is one of the ways to prevent dehydration.

There are many signs and symptoms of dehydration; thirst isn’t always are the first indicator of the body’s need for water. Many active seniors don’t feel thirsty until they’re already dehydrated. It’s common for seniors to take diuretics for medication, which adds to the risk for them to become dehydrated. That is why it’s so important to increase water intake during the hot summer months. According to an article from the AARP, symptoms seniors need to watch for when becoming dehydrated:

extreme thirst
less frequent urination
dark-colored urine
fatigue
dizziness
confusion

At Preston Pointe Retirement Community, we encourage our seniors to be proactive to prevent dehydration. Taking action now keeps seniors from dealing with a greater health risk.  Preston Pointe Retirement Community invites you to come and tour our property and have a cup of coffee, a cup of tea, or a cup of fresh fruit infused water with our family.  Remember to come and learn more about hydration and your health with Legacy Healthcare.
